The rate of female genital mutilation in Somalia is estimated at 98 percent. This harmful practice carries serious health consequences and it increases the likelihood of dying during childbirth. 34 percent of girls are married before their 18th birthday and 16 percent are married before the age of 15. Being married robs them of their childhoods and increases the likelihood of early pregnancy and school dropout.
Existing protection services are inadequate, especially in remote and in warring communities: there is widespread failure to promote and protect of female genital mutilation in Somalia for the latest years TALO and civil society organization were launched community awareness outreaches hiv/aids and FGM though the project focus on hiv/aids activities and TALO was promoted awareness against FGM in the Somalia communities and the mostly IDP´s and pastoralists were the affected and infected the risks of FGM due to ignorance and traditional believes, and the wrong believes caused to the young girls in Somalia acquired FGM when the girls reached 9 years up to 13 years that implemented the traditional midwiferies to cut all the young girls with their important virgins organs and that is bad character which will result to the young girls that they cannot bear /birthday and cannot tolerate during pregnancy period or the young girls complain menstruation period and health workers commented that FGM is big risk the lives of 98 %of Somalis young girls whether the families live in the cities or rural areas it is same case that caused ignorance and bad culture.
TALO will recommended awareness and training the communities such religious leader, traditional leaders, traditional midwiferies outside and inside cities and rural areas with emphasizing the media and education centers which can contribute to reduce the bad cultures that spreads un the societies.
